Integrated Circuit (IC) Overview, History and Uses

An integrated circuit is an electronic circuit that has many electronic components built into the same physical package. The transistor, resistor, capacitor, diodes, and other electronic components used in integrated circuits form all modern electronics' building blocks. The integration of these components onto a single chip makes them much smaller, faster, and more efficient than individual members. A Brief History of Integrated Circuits Integrated circuits was made possible by the transistor's invention in 1947, which was the first semiconductor device. The transistor is a semiconductor with an extremely high electrical resistance that acts as a switch. The transistor can turn an electrical current on or off. Integrated circuits were first developed in the early 1960s.

To build a primary IC, you will first need to create a schematic diagram and then translate that into a circuit diagram. Next, you will need to fabricate a photomask (for a microchip) or make a metal mask (for a larger IC). Next, you will lay down the metal interconnects using a chemical process called photolithography. After that, you will etch the interconnects utilizing an etching process. And finally, you will apply the dielectric and planarize it is using chemical methods.

The process of designing an IC (integrated circuit) is a long and complex one. Once a research and development team come up with an idea to implement, the design process must begin. This starts with creating a schematic diagram of all the electronic components that need to be integrated and then connecting them so that the circuit functions as intended. Once this is done, the design process moves to the layout stage, where the circuit is "drawn" using special software. The layout is done in such a way that all the components, as well as the connections between them, are in the correct positions to function correctly.

Types and uses of integrated circuit devices.

The first integrated circuits were transistors, and it was almost inevitable that someone would question the limitations of these devices and wonder what more could be done with them. From this, microprocessors were born and---through a process of evolution and revolution---developed into the complex devices now found in every smartphone.

Most people think that integrated circuit devices have only one use, but that's far from the truth. These devices can be used to replace several different types of electronic devices. The integrated circuit device takes all the best features of these electronic devices and rolls them into one unit. For example, some of the electronic devices that an integrated circuit device can replace are a battery, a fan, a radio, a CD player, and a cell phone. A battery is a unit that stores electricity to power electronic devices like cell phones, mp3 players, and even flashlights. A battery is also used in cars to power the ignition and control most of its electrical components.
